County Programs
Among many programs under the umbrella of the County impact bikeability, a few stand out:
Principally there is the Bikeways Program managed by Charlie Denney, the County's Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Manager. The Bikeways Program is responsible for designing and implementing the many projects that add and enhance the County's bikeways system. These projects include trails, bike lane, bicycle routes, bike parking racks, and various other improvements for safety and bicycle accessibility. The program also produces the County's bike map, organizes some bike events, and helps to develop the regional bike safety education program.
A major partnership between Arlington Department of Environmental Services, Arlington Public Schools, and Arlington Police Department is providing Safe Routes to Schools.
The Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program, whose primary goal is to provide safer environments for walkers, bicyclists and motorists in County neighborhoods, has been growing rapidly since its inception in 1999, in partnership with efforts in Neighborhood Conservation.
Improving the cycling environment and managing other modes of travel along many of the County's busiest thoroughfares is the domain of the Arterial Transportation Management (ATM) program.
Neighborhood Conservation is a program unique to Arlington that provides incentives (in the way of project funding) for communities to take on a role in shaping their own futures.
