Bike Parking or Art?

Popping up around Arlington are a new design of bike rack, the bike circle rack. These racks not only are functional for securely parking two bikes, but they also have a nice aesthetic, perfect for Arlington. The bike circle rack installation started off as a demonstration measure to replace de facto bike parking on parking meter poles which was being removed for a pilot multi-space meter program that uses fewer electronic booths per block to purchase meter time, rather than one meter per parking space. With the removal of parking meter heads, there were fewer places to park one's bike.

Seeing an opportunity, innovative members of the BikeArlington team installed two test bike racks onto the vacant poles, providing a secure parking spot for two bikes each. The top of the bike racks are designated with an easy-to-distinguish bicycle design that prevents potential thieves from lifting a locked bike up and over the pole. Even more, various types of bike locks may be used on the repurposed poles making it convenient for cyclists to use the racks.

The racks were such a hit that we have worked with the manufacturer, Creative Metalworks LLC, to provide the bike circle welded on a pole. The cost per rack is about $160. The first few of these racks have been installed in the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, however, more will be placed County-wide.
